Sylvia's journey into assisted living investing began not in a boardroom or through a market analysis, but through one of life's most personal experiences - caring for her aging mother.
In 2016, Sylvia's father unexpectedly passed away. Throughout her life, her mother had been the one with ongoing health challenges, so losing her father first came as a surprise. Suddenly, Sylvia found herself navigating a new reality, becoming her mother's primary advocate and caregiver.
For three years, she balanced the demands of everyday life while rushing to emergency rooms, coordinating medical care, and trying to ensure her mother remained safe and comfortable. At first, her mother's needs seemed manageable. She simply needed help with cooking and housekeeping. But over time, her health declined. Tasks that most people take for granted - preparing meals, cleaning, and even mobility - became increasingly difficult.
As her mother's care needs grew, Sylvia discovered just how challenging it was to find the right support. When she began researching assisted living communities in California, she encountered two significant barriers: affordability and availability. The cost of care was staggering, and even when families had the financial resources to pay for it, many facilities had waiting lists that stretched for months.
Her family could have sold her mother's home to fund assisted living, but that didn't solve the immediate problem. They still needed care right away, and there simply weren't enough options available.
Through this experience, Sylvia gained a firsthand understanding of a growing crisis facing millions of families. The "Silver Tsunami," the aging of the Baby Boomer generation, is creating unprecedented demand for senior care services. More older adults need support than ever before, yet the supply of quality assisted living communities has not kept pace.
For Sylvia, assisted living became more than an investment opportunity. It became a mission.
She saw the potential to combine the stability and scalability of multifamily real estate with something even more meaningful: providing care, dignity, and support for seniors and their families during some of life's most vulnerable moments.
Today, Sylvia is passionate about investing in assisted living because she understands both the business opportunity and the human need behind it. She believes thoughtfully designed senior housing can deliver strong investments while also making a profound difference in people's lives. By helping create more quality care options, she hopes to give other families something she wished she had during her mother's journey - access to compassionate care when they need it most.
